Planning consent to create some 360 apartments was obtained by SG for the conversion of a redundant eight storey office building formerly belonging to Ford Motors, and adjacent to Basildon station in the centre of the town.
A contemporary elevation was created by the addition of a new double height architectural façade added to the existing structural frame of the building. Penthouse apartments were added at roof level with parking and retail accommodation being created at ground level. The central courtyards became private landscaped gardens.
The proposed design model demonstrates the opportunities and value of the innovative use of redundant commercial buildings.
